Flagship Projects: The Circle of Excellence Awards
The Circle of Excellence (COE) awards is an initiative of Mangosuthu University of Technology aimed at acknowledging and recognising outstanding academic achievement by high schools in Umlazi Township in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Accounting. These are the core subjects required for admission to various qualifications in Engineering, Biomedical Sciences and Management Sciences.
The Circle of Excellence awards honour:
- The top three schools in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Accounting;
- The top three schools in the Umlazi District for Overall Performance;
- The most improved school in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Accounting;
- The educator of the top Math learner in the Umlazi district (the Vice-Chancellor’s Special Award).
In 2016, MUT also introduced the Felix Mshololo Brand Leadership award in honour of the late Mr Felix Mshololo, former principal of Menzi High School.
Umlazi Township, where MUT is situated, is home to 28 high schools which, notwithstanding their limited resources, have done their best to position the township favourably through their reputation for producing good matric results.
The Circle of Excellence awards provide these schools with an equal platform on which to compete with each other, and each year the competition has intensified, with new names coming to the fore amongst the top achievers.
Its broader intention is to add value towards the development of Umlazi Township and to help contribute to local community upliftment, in line with MUT’s strategic goal of contributing to the socio-economic advancement of historically disadvantaged communities in KZN.
